MARS

The Red Planet is Earth's closest cousin, and a recent discovery has raised the tantalizing possibility that life once existed on Mars.

Mars, with its ocher color, relatively swift motion among the stars, and changeable brightness, has long been associated with war, disaster, death, and pestilence. To many ancient people, who feared that changes in the sky portended changes for the worse on Earth, such an association was natural. Our name for the planet is that of the Roman war god, who took on the same attributes as his Greek forerunner, Ares.
