AN ELUSIVE LIGHT
A manifestation of the zodiacal light appears in another part of the sky, where it has a different name—the gegenschein, or counterglow. A very faint elliptical glow some 10 degrees across, this phenomenon appears opposite the Sun in what is called the antisolar region of the sky.
The best time to locate the gegenschein is around midnight in early fall or early spring. This is when it is projected into a relatively star-poor region of the sky, away from the Milky Way. Dark, clear moonless nights are requisite to see this most elusive of sky glows. The technique of averted vision will also help you see the gegenschein.
