TYPES OF ASTEROID

Scientists classify asteroids two main kinds, based on their reflectivity. The darker kind reflect 5 percent or less of the sunlight falling on them, and resemble dark stony meteorites.

The brighter kind reflect about 20 percent of sunlight and look like light-colored stony meteorites. A rare third type resemble iron meteorites and may be the shattered metallic cores of ancient protoasteroids.
