OPTICAL DESIGNS

Eyepieces are available in various optical designs. Some manufacturers have exclusive rights to certain designs—such as Edmund Scientific's RKE models, Meade's Modified Achromats, and TeleVue's Nagler and Panoptic series. But the most common designs are sold by nearly every dealer.

KEEPING OPTICS SPARKLING

Nothing can smear your view of stars and planets better than an eyepiece coated with dust, eyel'ash oil, and fingerprints. To clean an eyepiece, first blow off loose dust with a lens blower. Then lightly moisten a Q-tip cotton swab with camera-lens cleaning fluid.

Telescope Eyepiece Telescope Eyepiece: Astronomy: Telescope Eyepiece - Focal Length-EYEPIECE FOCAL LENGTHS

EYEPIECE FOCAL LENGTHS

Eyepieces are sold not by their magnifications but by their focal lengths (always given in millimeters). Look for numbers such as 25 mm, 12 mm, or 9 mm on the barrel. This indicates the focal length of the miniature optics inside the eyepiece.

Telescope Eyepiece Telescope Eyepiece: Astronomy: Telescope Eyepiece - BARREL SIZES

BARREL SIZES

Eyepieces come in three barrel sizes: 0.965 inch (24.5 mm), 1.25 inch (31.8 mm), and 2 inch (50.8 mm). Many small starter telescopes accept only 0.965 inch eyepieces. Unfortunately, the Huygenian and Ramsden models of eyepieces usually packed with these telescopes are of mediocre quality.

SELECTING EYEPIECES

Whenever you look through a telescope, you look through an eyepiece. Eyepieces are usually the first accessories telescope owners buy.
