Telescope Mount Telescope Mount: Astronomy: Telescope Mount - Equatorial-ONE OR TWO MOTIONS

ONE OR TWO MOTIONS

There are two main designs to consider—altazimuth and equatorial. The simplest and most common is the altazimuth mount, which swings up-and-down and left-to-right. Moving an altazimuth scope around the sky to find a target is easy.

WHICH MOUNT?

Altazimuth mounts are inexpensive and quick to set up. A special type of altazimuth is now one of the most common for reflector telescopes. Popularized by the Californian telescope-maker John Dobson, this wooden mount uses simple Teflon pads to provide smooth motions in both axes. It moves effortlessly, yet stays firmly on target. A gentle nudge every minute or two is all you need to keep objects in view.

Telescope Mount Telescope Mount: Astronomy: Telescope Mount - Aligned-GETTING ALIGNED

GETTING ALIGNED

For an equatorial mount to work properly, it must be polar aligned to the celestial pole. For Northern Hemisphere observers, this means aiming the polar axis toward Polaris, the northern pole star.

CHOOSING A TELESCOPE MOUNT

The best optics in the world are worthless without a sturdy mount—it is half the telescope.
