Through Telescope Through Telescope: Astronomy: Universe - OUR VIEW OF THE UNIVERSE

OUR VIEW OF THE UNIVERSE

The technological progress made in just one century has opened wide our windows on the universe.

For millenia humans have gazed at the stars and planets and wondered how far-away they lay, what they were made of, and how they got there.

ZOOMING IN

Filling a frame with a small section of the Moon requires lots of focal length, more than most telescopes otter. The answer is eyepiece projection. Many camera adapters come with an add-on extension tube that accepts an eyepiece, although Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes require a separate adapter called a tele-extender.

SHOOTING THE MOON

The best subject for trying prime-focus photography is the Moon. Even with slow film, exposures are only a fraction of a second. The size of the Moon in the frame depends on the scope's focal length. A 2,000 mm focal length tern produces a lunar disk big enough to fill a 35 mm frame. With a 1,000 mm system, the Moon will be about 9 mm across—still impressive.

DEEP-SKY OBJECTS

For faint deep-sky targets such as nebulas and galaxies, faster telescopes—ones with f-ratios of f/4 to f/7—are a definite advantage because they allow shorter exposure times. Alternatively, you can speed up a slower telescope with an accessory called a telecompressor.

THROUGH THE TELESCOPE

By shooting through a telescope, you can add frame-filling snapsliots of the Moon and close-ups of glowing nebulas to your astro-album.
